The Appalachian Black Bears did just enough to sneak past the Wilmington Atlantics, 4-3, at Old League Park. Appalachian pitcher François Morin earned player of the game honors. In 8 innings, Morin surrendered 7 hits, while striking out 8 and walking 2. He allowed 3 runs. Sandro Vargo was credited with the save for Appalachian, his 11th of the season.
Fred Kennedy, who is a four-time Slick Fielder Award winner, aided the Appalachian cause with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the sixth. For the game, the catcher went 2-3 with a double and a walk. He drove in 2 runs.
"We squandered some opportunities," said Wilmington manager Thomas Kerner.
The Black Bears bumped their record to 26-18 with this latest triumph.
