Breaking News | | Thursday, June 11th, 2020: Luis Díaz Picked SDMBCOL's Best Hitter Luis Díaz of the Storm Lake College Phoenix had a fine season this year and today he accepted the Outstanding Hitter Award for 2020.
The 21-year-old left fielder put up a .380 average and a .469 on-base percentage, piling up 57 hits, 15 doubles, 5 triples, 21 home runs, 51 RBIs and 52 runs scored. | | Monday, May 11th, 2020: SDMB College Announces #1 Player Storm Lake College's Luis Díaz would not be denied the SDMB College Player of the Week Award for this past week. His consistent stroke, which produced 11 hits in 20 at-bats and a .550 average, made him the clear favorite to win the honor.
"You just go out there and do what you have to do," said Díaz, "When I'm up, I try to focus and block everything else out of my mind... and have a good at-bat. I'm up there to get a hit or advance a runner, not to get caught up in the emotion of the moment. I hope I can win this award every week."
He also tallied 5 home runs, 10 RBIs and scored 8 runs.
In 2020 Díaz is batting .382 with 39 hits, 15 home runs, 41 RBIs, 20 walks, .488 OBP and has scored 36 runs. He has played in 28 games. | | Wednesday, May 6th, 2020: Díaz Connects for 3 Homers for Phoenix Luis Díaz of the Phoenix won the battle against Louisville College pitching, but lost the war. He hit three out of the park at Phoenix Stadium, got his name in the league record book, but Storm Lake College came up short in the win column, losing to the Sky Warriors 9-8. The Storm Lake College left fielder was red-hot, the ball just exploded off his bat all day long.
"I don't try to hit homers," he said. "I try to go out there and have good at-bats. If I put a good swing on the ball, then it is going to go out of the park. I didn't try to hit the first one or the second one or the third one. I just try to have good at-bats."
For the game he went 3 for 4 with 5 RBIs and 3 runs scored.
Where does he rank this day in his career? "It's up there," Díaz said. "I'll put it up there in the upper echelon, despite the loss."
L. Díaz hit a three-run home run off M. Fisher in the 1st, struck out in the 3rd, hit a solo-shot off J. Gilbert in the 5th and hit a solo-shot off S. Galdo in the 7th.
This season Díaz has hit at a .366 clip with 39 RBIs, 14 home runs and 34 runs scored.
