Atlantics Get Road Win, 3-0
|
The Wilmington Atlantics got a magnificent effort from pitcher Rick Griffin, who kept Atlanta hitters in check en route to a 3-0 Atlantics win at Old League Park. Griffin, now 12-14, was the winner. In 6 innings, he gave up 5 hits, while striking out 7, walking 5, and allowing no earned runs. Valentín Cedeño converted his 30th save in 33 tries.
The Atlantics got a big at-bat from catcher Carlton Whaley. For the game, Whaley was 1-4 with a home run. In the top of the second, with the bases empty, he stroked a solo home run. His 7th home run of the season gave Wilmington a 1-0 lead.
"I'm proud of the boys for pulling through," said Atlantics manager Thomas Kerner. "The wins don't come easy for this team, but everyone's got an extra jump in their step after a game like this."
The last-place Atlantics improved to 55-90.
